Studio
Johanna Seelemann leads a design studio exploring the mystification of everyday objects and materials. The studio works across a variety of typologies, from product design to research-driven installations, combining conceptual rigor with material and production insight.


Profile
Johanna Seelemann (b. 1990, Leipzig, Germany) founded the studio in 2020. She previously assisted Studio FormaFantasma. The designer developed her fascinations during the Contextual Design master program at the Design Academy in Eindhoven (2019) as well as the bachelor course in Product Design at the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík (2016).


EXHIBITIONS
Seelemann’s work has previously been exhibited at the Design Museum London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, the Villa Noailles in Hyères, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the MAKK Museum in Cologne, the Design Museum in Helsinki, the Regional Museum of Skåne, Vandalorum in Sweden, the Vögele Kulturzentrum in Switzerland, the Tønder Art Museum in Denmark, the Industrial Museum in Chemnitz and the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, among others.


Acknowledgements
For her work Johanna Seelemann was recently nominated for the Icelandic Design Awards in the product category, for the Dutch Design Awards in the category Emerging Talent, as well as the Ralph Saltzman Prize by the Design Museum in London. In 2023, she was shortlisted as Emerging Designer of the Year 2023 by Dezeen Awards. Furthermore, she received the Premiere Classe x Eyes on Talents Design Award 2023, the Green Concept Award 2022, and she is laureate of 2021 Design Parade Hyères Eyes on Talents x Frame Prize. In 2022 she was forwarded by FormaFantasma as one of the creative leaders of the future ‘expanding the ways design is practiced today’ as part of Wallpaper*s ‘5x5’ anniversary project. In 2021 she received the Talent Development Grant from the Creative Industries Fund NL. In 2019, Johanna and her part-time collaborator Björn Steinar got selected amongst the ‘Icon Design 100 Talents to watch’. In 2017 Johanna was selected as one of ‘20 young designers to shape the future of design’ by Design Indaba, World Design Events and Dutch Design Week.


EDUCATION
Johanna currently holds the visiting product design project professorship position at the Kunsthochschule in Kassel, starting fall semester 2025 / 2026. In Spring 2023, she held the position of programme director of the Master Design Explorations and Translations of the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík, alongside the activities of the studio.
